Ryan and Melissa had waited years for their daughter.
But only seconds after she was born, Ryan suddenly placed her back in my arms.
“I can’t take her home.”
Melissa began crying.
Then Ryan pointed toward the baby’s back.
Below her shoulder was a strange crescent-shaped birthmark.
I immediately understood his fear.
Years earlier, after our parents died, Ryan had discovered an old photograph hidden among our mother’s belongings. It showed a newborn baby with exactly the same mark.
Our mother had told him the baby was our older sister, who had supposedly died shortly after birth from a hereditary illness.
Ryan believed his daughter had inherited the same condition.
But the pediatrician examined her carefully.
“Your daughter is perfectly healthy. This is only a birthmark.”
We decided to investigate our family history.
That was when we discovered the truth.
Our older sister had never died.
Our parents had been extremely poor when she was born and had secretly placed her for adoption. Later, they invented the story about her death because they were ashamed to tell us what they had done.
Months later, we finally found her.
She still had the same crescent-shaped mark on her back.
And she was completely healthy.
Ryan broke down when he realized he had almost rejected his daughter because of a thirty-year-old lie.
He returned to her crib, lifted her into his arms, and whispered:
“I’m sorry I was afraid of you. I’ll never let fear separate us again.”
That evening, Ryan and Melissa finally took their daughter home to the nursery that had been waiting for her all along.
