Past presidents’ physicals: What we know so far

As the leader of one of the world’s most influential nations, the presidency puts an individual under constant public scrutiny, both during their time in office and long after they have left.

A recent CNN article shed light on the medical histories of several former United States presidents. These records mainly focus on basic health metrics such as height, weight, and overall health status. For instance, former President Obama’s record even mentioned a surgery for the removal of a skin tag.

Although presidential candidates are not required to disclose their health status, Dr. Jackson chose to do so during a recent meeting, confirming Donald Trump’s “excellent health.”

In January 1975, Ford’s doctor happily reported his excellent health, with all medical tests yielding normal results. This positive assessment continued in subsequent years, highlighting Ford’s ability to work long hours and his commitment to maintaining physical well-being, including his use of the White House swimming pool for relaxation.

Reagan’s 1981 physical report, endorsed by 14 experts, declared him to be in excellent health, having fully recovered from the gunshot wounds suffered during an assassination attempt. Reagan’s minor medical procedures, such as cyst removal, were also documented without raising major health concerns.

Similarly, Bush’s medical examinations in 1989 depicted him as being in extremely good physical condition, despite mild osteoarthritis. Clinton’s health records revealed various procedures, including the removal of cysts and skin cancer lesions, along with his later adoption of veganism.

Bush Jr.’s medical reports noted his high cardiovascular fitness despite occasional indulgence in diet soda and cigarettes. Obama’s presidency saw regular medical checkups, showcasing his healthy vital signs and medication regimen.

Trump’s health, as documented by his personal physician, consistently emphasized his excellent overall health, although controversies arose regarding the authenticity of some medical assessments. Concerns about Trump’s health were periodically raised, especially during his presidency, with discussions ranging from his physical fitness to his cognitive abilities.

Currently, President Biden’s medical records confirm his good health, although occasional incidents of stumbling attract national attention.
